We’d like to introduce you to Kitty Tyrol.

Kitty is our  super star Senior Training Manager and a powerful and brilliant representative of The Girls Circle Association. 2 weeks ago Kitty traveled to Baltimore Maryland to present on both The Council and Girls Circle models at a national conference on school safety. Below is what she had to say about it…

Girls Circle and The Council for Boys and Young Men programs were presented at the National Association of School Resource Officers SRO-School Safety Conference in Baltimore, MD on Thursday, July 2, 2009.

The week long conference was held at the Hilton Baltimore offering a great week of education, training, and networking “designed for those who work so diligently to promote safer kids, (and) safer schools.”  Girls Circle and The Council workshops were offered in the Anti-Bullying track;  attendees were introduced to our model programs and had the opportunity to experience an actual Circle and Council during the workshop.  Attendees came from all over the US including  Alabama, Texas, New Jersey, New York, Missouri, Georgia, Maryland, New Mexico, Colorado, North Carolina, and Montana and from a variety of positions like School Resource Officers, Principals and Administrators, Counselors, Sheriffs, Police Officers, and Probation.  Experiences afforded exploration of challenges both girls and boys/young men face in schools and communities, risk factors, as well as recognition of their resiliency, strengths and capacities to develop into solid citizens and to be successful in school.

The Council provided participants with hands-on practice in the model and included an activity called, “Catch the Message” which encouraged active listening in a game of ball toss.  Girls Circle provided participants with a Listening & Reflecting Activity that prompted participants to recall their own adolescence; followed by a creative activity, writing the “Just Because” poem from GC Activity Guide, Relationships with Peers.  All participants were engaged in their circle groups and responded with enthusiasm and appreciation for the experience, and committing to continued group experiences for girls and boys in their communities and schools.
