Body Image Activity Guide More Diverse Focus

Recently we shared news that some of our materials are being  improved.

One improvement will be available in time for your fall Girls Circle groups -Week One of the Body Image Activity Guide.

Since Giovanna and I wrote this guide several years ago, we’ve  heard both fabulous stories and some constructive criticism.

On the plus side, the guide has provided themes and activities  which have strengthened Girls Circle participants’ body image.  In fact, our research studies have shown significant increases in girls’ positive body image across ethnic groups in multiple studies.  There is a very strong link between girls’ body image and their overall mental health.  We love the work that facilitators are doing together with girls to honor girls’ inherent beauty and well being.  Staying connected to what girls feel physically and emotionally, and expressing themselves authentically,  girls make the link  between their bodies,  true selves,  intuition and their power.

But we are always learning, and we’ve had excellent feedback from girls and facilitators that the Body Image guide has a  bit of a narrow focus and doesn’t reflect the diversity of girls’ experiences and concerns around their bodies.  African American girls, for example, have said it’s obvious white girls wrote the guide because there’s such an emphasis on fat and thin bodies.

That’s why we will be sharing with you a revised Week One.  It sets the tone for the issues, experiences and connections girls might want to explore in Girls Circle about body image.   Instead of a focus on fat and thin, we’ll now focus on beautiful and healthy bodies.  We’ll explore all the possible meanings of a beautiful body and a healthy body, with a wide range of physical features, challenges, and styles.  There’s plenty of room for varied experiences, values, and meanings.  There’s room to make new connections, too, around family, culture, media, and more.

We hope this new first unit is valuable to you and the girls in your coming circles.  Without a doubt, when you tell us what happens and what girls want and need, appreciate, connect to, and look for, when you tell us what rings a chord and what interferes, together we are better able to meet girls where they want and need to be met.

We’ll be letting you know very shortly when that updated week is ready to send out to you.

In the meantime, best wishes for health, beauty and a positive body image to you.  We  honor each of you in all of your beauty!

Be well!

~Beth
